In the heart of the Massif des Costes, Vernègues sits at a strategic crossroads in the Rhône Valley, inviting visitors to discover this village and delve into its rich historical tapestry.
The Plateau du Grand Puech offers a breathtaking vista of the region, revealing traces of ancient life, such as a shelter beneath a rock – a testament to Neolithic habitation. Following a migration of the population toward the more fertile valley of Cazan, necessitated by medieval invasions, the population settled atop the plateau, giving rise to the “Castrum Alvernicum,” which evolved into Vernègues. This tranquil agricultural village gained prominence following a seismic event of magnitude 6 on June 11, 1909, which partially destroyed and prompted the rebuilding of Vernègues.
Today, visitors can discover the ruins of a Gallo-Roman temple, St. Symphorien Chapel, known and frequented by many pilgrims, the remnants of the seigneurial castle, and the old village.
